A label is a useful starting point when considering a dietary supplement. Look for the serving size, ingredients, and amount of each ingredient—not just the words on the front.
Ask what it adds to your routine
Supplements cannot replace a varied diet. Some may be helpful in particular circumstances, but the right choice depends on your individual needs.
Check before combining
- Keep a list of the medicines and supplements you take.
- Ask a pharmacist or clinician about possible interactions.
- Follow the recommended use; more is not necessarily better.
Understand the limits of a claim
The FDA does not determine whether a dietary supplement is effective before it is marketed. A confident marketing message is not the same as evidence that a product will work for you.
Bring the label to an appointment if you are unsure. It makes it easier to discuss the specific ingredients and amounts.
